About the New England Chamber Choir
The New England Chamber Choir is a non-profit regionally based choral society which draws its members from over 22 communities in the central Connecticut region. The primary purpose of the all volunteer choir is to provide the residents of Connecticut with opportunities to experience the best of the western musical tradition by presenting concerts in their local communities. The choir also provides a setting for gifted amateur vocalists and instrumentalists to perform in both large choral works and smaller ensemble or chamber settings. Choir members have additional opportunities for creativity in conducting (there are currently
three assistant conductors) and in composing works that will be heard in one of our concerts. The choir currently has 50 members, drawn from within a 40 mile radius of the Hartford/Middletown area. They have been performing continuously for
over 30 years and in this time they have presented over 200 concerts in over fifty locations in all regions of Connecticut. The Treble Choir, of singers 6 to 16 years old, frequently
participates in the concert performances.
Director
The choir is led by Mr. Richard Wm. Donohue, Director of Music at the Church of St. Peter, in
Higganum, Connecticut. He has been the Music Director of the choir since its inception and is also the director of a private music studio. Mr. Donohue holds degrees in music from Wesleyan and Yale Universities and is an accomplished organist, pianist, tenor and published composer of choral compositions. The New England Chamber Choir often premieres his new works throughout its concert season.
Performances
The choir presents two or three concerts in early December, two or three near Easter, and one performance of a major choral work with full orchestra in the spring. The New England Chamber Choir Orchestra members are drawn from local sources including university
faculties and regional orchestras. A variable number of chamber music recitals employing small ensembles of choir members are also presented each year. Many of our concerts are subsequently rebroadcast over WMRD (Middletown) and WLIS (Old Saybrook). |
