- Crayons and paper to make rubbing of cool
leaves
- A bug Jar (in case you find any interesting
bugs to keep as pets)
- Identification books (plant, bird, rock,
animal tracks)
Activities to try in the trail...
- Pick up a trail guide at either end of the
trail and just enjoy the walk
- Take a notebook and pencil with you and sit in
one spot for 10 minutes. Try to count all the animal sounds you
hear or do some free verse writing or draw a flower.
- Make home-made binoculars with two toilet paper
rolls, bring them with you and sit quietly looking for
birds.
- Do a "Home Hunt". Count how many animals homes
your can find as you walk through the trail. These include holes in
the ground, trees or bird nests.
- Go to station 10 and take a look under the
rocks in the small creek. Count how many different tiny animals
you can find.
- Go once through the trail using the guide and
then quiz yourself on your way back
- Create a Clinometer to determine the height of
trees. All you need is a tape measure, a protractor, a string with
a washer fasten to the end and a straw. Tape the straw to the flat
end of the protractor to serve as a sighting guide. Tie the string
to the middle of the protractor so it makes a 90 degree angle when
straw is flat. Now lay the tap measure out from the tree. Slowly
walk backwards and look up at the top of the tree through the
straw as a partner watches until the string is at 45 degrees. This
creates a right triangle with two equal sides. The distance for
the tree at 45 degrees is then the height of the tree.
